Toronto police officer fatally shoots driver of alleged stolen vehicle, SIU says

Ontario’s police watchdog says a Toronto officer fatally shot the driver of an alleged stolen vehicle early this morning.

The Special Investigations Unit says Toronto police were investigating the theft of a vehicle from Toronto and tracked it to Mississauga.

The SIU says the officers arrived at the vehicle’s location a little after midnight, and there was a collision between the vehicle and three unmarked police cruisers.

The watchdog agency says one officer fired at least one shot from the road and hit the driver of the vehicle, who died at the scene.

It says three other people in the vehicle were not injured and have been taken into custody. Two other guns were found at the scene.

The SIU says another Toronto police officer was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries after the collision.

Peel regional police say there are no other suspects.
